They are effective in relieving arthritis symptoms. If a NSAID is proving effective, you should feel some improvement in pain and stiffness within a week. Although no major differences in effectiveness have been demonstrated between the NSAIDs available, individual patients sometimes find one drug to be very much more effective than another. There are two categories of NSAIDs: conventional, and the more recently developed COX-2 inhibitors. Conventional NSAIDs effectively treat the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, but with long-term use they may lead to a variety of toxic side effects, including gastrointestinal, liver or renal injury, heart failure and adverse reproductive outcomes. Celecoxib and Celebrex have proven as effective as conventional NSAIDs in decreasing pain and inflammation but without the same degree of toxic side effects. Since arthritis has no known cure, current drug therapies aim to minimize pain, preserve joint function and limit disease progression by reducing inflammation.
