Like other diseases, mental illnesses can be treated. The good news is that most people who have mental illnesses, even serious ones, can lead productive lives with proper treatment. Mood disorders are one form of serious mental illness. Among the other mental illnesses that may at least partly resemble schizophrenia are depression, bipolar disorder, other psychoses, and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. Three major types of medication are used to treat depression, ADD/ADHD and other mental disorders: tricyclics; the newer selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors). In general, the goal of treatment with mental medications is to effectively control signs and symptoms at the lowest possible dosage. The appropriate medication and dosage vary widely from person to person.
